How to Select a Propane Boat Heater

When selecting a propane boat heater, it is important to choose the proper one for the space that you will be heating. There are many models out there from portable to fixed mount. Some are designed to be used in enclosed ventilated spaces, and others such as portable for outdoor use, or very well-ventilated enclosed spaces. There are vented and non vented models to choose from.

When figuring out the correct size of marine propane heater, you first need to determine the cubic feet of space that you will be heating. This can be done by multiplying the length, x the width, x the height which will give you the total cubic feet of space that the heater will need to be able to heat. Now you're ready to go shopping for a heater that puts out enough BTU's for heating your cubic feet of space.

Safety should always be a priority when selecting a propane boat heater, and you will want to be sure that you select one with a built-in thermocouple. In the event the flame was to be extinguished it will shut off the gas flow to the heater. Another thing to look for is an oxygen depletion device which will shut off both the flame and the gas supply if the oxygen level in the enclosed space drops below 95% of normal. There are propane tank lockers that you can purchase that you can mount outside the cabin area that will not only protect the tank from the elements, and would also make it in accordance with USCG regulations.

Propane Boat heaters are becoming quite popular in the tiny home arena as well. Because of their size and efficiency, they take up less space and are less costly to operate. One such popular model is the Dickinson Newport Propane Fireplace that is available in the models P-9000 and P-12000. The P-9000 can heat up to 800 cubic feet of space ( 10'x10'x8' ) and the P-1200 up to 1100 cubic feet of space ( 12'x12'x7.5' ). Not only are these propane boat heaters efficient and easy to operate, they are attractive in appearance and have a glass viewing window for your enjoyment. They are made out of 304 stainless steel which will hold up for many years of use.
